On Saturday, March 14, 2020, the Prime Minister of Sint Maarten, Silveria Jacobs, issued temporary Travel Restrictions for incoming visitors to Sint Maarten. The Travel Restrictions provide that, effective on Tuesday, March 17, 2020, visitors from the United States, Canada, and Europe including the United Kingdom and Ireland will not be permitted to enter Sint Maarten until April 1, 2020, at the earliest. Even though St. Maarten has only one reported case, we believe that the ban will be extended due to the increase in cases world-wide.
For the past week, the management and staff at OBBR and CBC have been working hard to get all of our owners and guests onto the last outgoing flights. It is expected that by Tuesday, March 24, there will be no owners or guests staying in Oyster Bay Bech Resort and Coral Beach Club.
All Owners scheduled for vacation with us from March 17 through April 1, 2020, (“The Restricted Time Period” ) will be permitted to bank their week for future usage commencing on or prior to September 15, 2021. Any hotel guest scheduled to arrive for stays during the Restricted Time Period will receive a full refund of their deposits. It appears likely that the Restricted Time Period will be extended based upon the fluid nature of this situation and the fact that the airlines or Sint Maarten government may further restrict travel. We will keep you updated on all new events and announcements.
The Island of St. Maarten /St. Martin seems to be avoiding the virus so far. There have been just a few cases reported on the Island nations. All have a travel background from afflicted areas, and as of this writing, there has been no “community spread” identified. All restaurants, casinos, bars, hotels, guest houses, and other gathering places have been closed by government edict. The population is dedicated to suppressing any spread of the virus through self- quarantine or strict social distancing.
The employees have been put on a reduced work schedule but are all still employed and being paid. In order to maintain social distancing, only half of the employees are asked to work at a time. None of the employees have reported in sick. The employees will be asked to scrub down all areas and clean the resort to a spanking new level. We also plan to use this downtime to complete an in-depth inspection of every unit in the resorts and repair and replace all maintenance issues throughout the resort. When we reopen, hopefully very soon, we will shine.
We look forward to getting past this difficult and uncertain time and getting back to providing the very best vacation experience to all of our outstanding owners and guests. We will overcome this challenge by taking good care of ourselves and our neighbors and following restrictions decreed or recommended by the government to stop the spread of Covid-19.
